Greybeard

Novel counterpart: Il Griso

Greybeard, token

Ability

You might register as good. If there are 5 or more players alive and another evil player dies, you might become their character.

Ben pensato… vo e torno subito.

The Greybeard is an old hand at serving dangerous men, and an even older hand at surviving them. When one of his wicked companions falls, he may simply step into the place they leave behind… even if that place belongs to the Plague itself.

How to Run

The Greybeard might register as good.

Whenever another evil player dies while at least 5 players are alive, the Storyteller may make the Greybeard become that player's character.

The dead player remains dead. The Greybeard remains alive and simply changes character.

Resolve this change immediately when the evil player dies.

If the Greybeard becomes a character whose night action has not yet occurred that night, wake the Greybeard at that character's normal place in the night order.

Examples

The Tailor learns the Greybeard's alignment. The Storyteller may show good.

The Nun receives information involving the Greybeard as a neighbour. The Greybeard may register as good and therefore not count as an evil neighbour.

The Plague dies while 8 players are alive. The Storyteller makes the Greybeard become the Plague. The original Plague remains dead, and the Greybeard is now the living Plague.

The Kite dies while 6 players are alive. The Storyteller chooses not to change the Greybeard's character. The Greybeard remains the Greybeard.

The Spreader is good but registers as an evil Minion when they die. The Greybeard does not become the character the Spreader merely registered as. Registration does not change the Spreader's actual character or alignment.

The Plague dies while only 4 players are alive. The Greybeard cannot become the Plague.

Rules & Clarifications

  • The Greybeard might register as good to abilities that detect or count alignment.
  • Registering as good does not actually change the Greybeard's alignment.
  • The Greybeard may still register as poisoned because of the Plague while simultaneously registering as good.
  • The Greybeard changes character, not player identity. The dead player is not resurrected.
  • The Greybeard remains evil when changing character unless another ability changes their alignment.
  • The ability triggers when an actually evil player dies. Merely registering as evil does not necessarily make a player actually evil.
  • If the Greybeard becomes the Plague as the Plague dies, the game continues with the Greybeard as the new Plague.
  • This is an immediate trigger and does not wait for a dedicated Greybeard night-order position.
  • False character registration does not determine which character the Greybeard becomes. The relevant character is the character actually held by the dead player.
