Friar

Novel counterpart: Fra Cristoforo

Friar, token

Ability

Once per game, at night*, choose a dead player: if they are good, they immediately use their ability as if alive, sober and healthy.

Vengo a proporle un atto di giustizia, a pregarla d’una carità.

The Friar grants one final act to a dead good character.

How to Run

Each night except the first, if the Friar has not used their ability, wake them.

The Friar may choose a dead player.

If the chosen player is good, wake that player.

For the duration of this resolution, treat them as though they were:

  • alive;
  • sober;
  • healthy.

Immediately resolve their ability as far as it can meaningfully function at that moment.

If the character has an ability that normally acts only on the first night, or grants starting information, resolve that part immediately as though this were their first night.

Do not repeat setup modifications. Effects such as adding characters, changing the Outsider count, or otherwise altering setup are never applied again.

If an ability instead requires another phase of the game, a past or future event, or a condition that is not currently satisfied, that part does nothing.

The chosen player remains dead throughout and after the resolution.

Mark the Friar as USED.

Examples

The Friar chooses a dead good Doctor. The Doctor immediately chooses a player, learns whether they are poisoned and, if appropriate, makes them sober and healthy.

The Friar chooses a dead good Cardinal. The Cardinal immediately learns how many living players are poisoned.

The Friar chooses a dead good Housekeeper. Although the Housekeeper normally receives information only at the start of the game, the Storyteller immediately shows 3 characters: 1 is in play and the other 2 are not.

The Friar chooses a dead good Nun. The Nun immediately receives their starting information again: an in-play character and the number of evil neighbours of the relevant player. The Nun's [+0 or +1 Outsider] setup effect is not applied again.

The Friar chooses a dead good Bride's Mother. The Storyteller may show the Groom or the Bride again, but [+Groom or Bride] does not alter the game setup a second time.

The Friar chooses a dead good Curate whose ability had not already been exhausted. The Curate may choose another player as though it were their first night. However, once the Friar's resolution ends, the Curate is dead again and therefore has no functioning ability: the new Madness does not persist and cannot later be broken.

If the Curate had already exhausted their ability and is marked NO ABILITY, the Friar cannot restore that spent ability.

The Friar chooses a dead good Tailor. The Tailor immediately chooses a player. They learn an alignment only if the Tailor's normal conditions can be satisfied during this resolution.

The Friar chooses a dead character whose ability triggers only when they are executed. No execution is occurring, so the Friar does not manufacture one and that trigger does not occur.

The Friar chooses a dead evil player. Nothing happens.

Rules & Clarifications

  • The chosen player must be dead.
  • The chosen player must be actually good for their ability to function.
  • The player does not truly return to life and remains dead after the resolution.
  • As if alive, sober and healthy applies only while resolving the chosen ability.
  • First-night actions and starting information may be resolved again during the Friar's effect.
  • Setup modifications are never applied again.
  • The Friar does not recreate nominations, executions, dawn, previous nights, or other events merely to satisfy an ability's condition.
  • Ongoing effects created during the resolution cease afterward if they require the dead player to continue having a functioning ability.
  • An ability that has already been permanently spent or lost is not refreshed merely because the Friar chose that player.
  • The chosen player may still bluff afterward about what they selected or learned.
  • The Friar's ability is spent once used, even if the selected ability produces little or no effect.
